Suitcase and Door Mat

After decades of travelling, the Suitcase finally decides to take a rest.

"Hi, I've been travelling non-stop and am now very tired. May I come in and have a rest?" the Suitcase said to the Door Mat.

"Travelling for business?" the Door Mat asks.

"No, for a search."

"What are you searching for?" the Door Mat asks.

The Suitcase freezes at the doorway.

It tries hard to remember.

It had started it's journey so long ago that it has forgotten the initial reason for that journey.

"What am I searching for?" the Suitcase asks itself aloud, frowning.

"Don't fret over this. You're not the only one. Come on in and join the rest," the Door Mat welcomes with a warm embrace.

Opening my Suitcase

"A writer writes from his experience, and the more you experience the more you can write."
~ Yusuf Islam (formerly known as Cat Stevens) on his latest songs.

I've always felt secure and comfortable living in my own suitcase.

And now, I think it is time for me to get out and see the world.

The Good Ol' Days | Movie tickets

Haven't seen this type of sign board for ages.

With the kind permission of an Eng Wah
(Suntec City) staff, I managed to take this for remembrance.

And to match the above sign board, here is a proud collection of mine......

... with mosaic flooring too!!!!

I miss the hand-written-cinema-seat type of ticket.

These were the good ol' days.

"A Steady Rain" & Many Steady Phone Calls

NEW YORK - Hugh Jackman knows how to stop the show. He did it recently when a cell phone call interrupted a preview performance of "A Steady Rain," the Broadway play that stars Jackman and Daniel Craig. The moment captured on an amateur video shown by the TMZ.com Web site appears to have been recorded by someone in the audience.

It shows Jackman breaking character to tell the owner of the ringing cell phone, "You want to get that?" as the audience erupts in cheers. As the ringing persists, Jackman pleads: "Come on, just turn it off." He then paces the stage of the Gerald Schoenfeld Theatre, waits about a minute for the ringing to stop and the play resumes.

Producers of "A Steady Rain" declined to comment.

The interruption occurred during an intense moment in the play, when Jackman's character, a Chicago policeman, reveals haunting memories. A customary loudspeaker announcement reminds theatergoers to turn off their phones. Since the incident, ushers who seat patrons and pass out playbills at Schoenfeld are also instructing patrons to silence their phones.

"A Steady Rain," a taut drama about the relationship between two policemen, opens Tuesday for a limited engagement through Dec. 6. The play by Keith Huff already has proven to be a potent box-office winner, playing to capacity audiences since it began previews on Sept. 10.
Jackman won a Tony Award in 2004 for his performance as Peter Allen in the musical "The Boy from Oz." Craig, filmdom's latest James Bond, is making his Broadway debut.

Is there anything more annoying than a cell phone ringing in the middle of a movie theater? Yes, there is! A cell phone ringing in the middle of a live play! As you undoubtedly know, Hugh Jackman and Daniel Craig are currently treading the boards in A Steady Rain, a gritty Chicago cop drama that just kicked off on Broadway. Now, when you decide to spend the money and see a once-in-a-lifetime performance, you can either give it your full intention and see how genius creates a legend, or you can leave your cell phone on so your friends can call you and find out if Craig's wearing his Bond swimtrunks.

Some jackass decided to do the latter. Perhaps he or she had a death wish to be ripped apart by the bulging muscles that make up Craig and Jackman, or maybe they thought no one would notice if it kept ringing, and ringing, and ringing. Luckily for the idiot, Jackman was a class act. Luckily for the audience, he didn't even break character and practically made it part of the performance. (I would have preferred seeing Craig and Jackman rip the person apart with their bare hands, but I like violence, and the possibility that one or both would have torn their shirt off in doing so.) Check out the video below the jump for a good laugh.

I'd kill to see this play (Gritty 1970s cop drama! Chicago! Hugh Jackman! It's all of my favorite things!) and the fact that some moron has the time, access, and money to just ruin it with a cell phone really irks me. I'm thinking it might be time to require phones be coat-checked before entering a theater, be it at your multiplex or on the Great White Way, because it seems few can be trusted to actually turn them off.

*************************************************

In character, I've picked up a prop dropped accidentally by a fellow cast during a show.

In character, I've forced opened the set's jammed door - that was not supposed to be jammed - during a show.

But I've never tried - in character - to reprimand a senseless audience who allow his/her mobile to ring during a show.

I'm sure I'll have plenty of opportunity to try this out in future productions because there are just too many self-centred people living amongst us.

He Cares

When a friend gets worked up,
it shows he cares.

When a friend gets upset,
it shows he cares.

When a friend gets disappointed,
it shows he cares.

It's great to have a friend like that.

Long live friendship!!!!!!

When a Watch is Not a Watch

This watch was a gift bought from the 'pasar malam' type of stall. I like the design very much and I thank the person who gave this to me.

However, it stopped moving after a day's wear. The watch repairman said that it'll cost me S$65 to repair it. He advised me not to bother as this watch is worth only S$10 from the street stalls.

Yes, I know it's a waste of money to repair it.

But it's a waste of money to throw it away.

Plus, I like the watch.

But it does not move anymore.

I decide to wear it NOT like a watch but like a bracelet instead.

This is challenging because I keep looking at the watch to check the time.

11:25 succeeds in giving me a fright; making me think that I am late for my appointment.

11:25 succeeds in making me relax; allowing me to think that I have a lot of time left before my next appointment.

11:35 succeeds in making me laugh; when I remember that the watch is broken and I can be that forgetful.

How long will it take me to retrain myself to treat a watch NOT like a watch?

But should I really retrain myself? After all, forgetfully glancing at the watch emotes different feelings within me.

Do I want to take that away?

Letting Go

A Cicada, which has outgrown itself, gained the ability to crawl out of its own casing that has become too small for it to breathe.

It leaves behind an intact carcass.

"What am I going to do with such a beautiful carcass?" the cicada wonders.

Because it doesn't want to abandon a body that once belonged to it, it decides to carry the carcass around.

Because it is burdened by the cumbersome carcass, it has become easy target to the sharp-eyed birds.

Because it has become an easy prey to the sharp-eyed birds, it lives its days in fear.

Because it is constantly in fear, it starts to doubt the reason for its very own existence.

"Let it go, let it go...." the wind whispers.

"Should I?' asks the Cicada.
"Let it go, let it go...." the wind stresses.

"Can I?'

"Let it go, let it go...." and the wind takes off.

"Will I?" wonders the Cicada, unaware of an approaching spider, looking for its next meal....

and a praying mantis spotting the trail of that spider,

and a bird perched on a nearby branch with eyes locked on that unsuspecting mantis,

and an eagle up in the sky maneuvering its course towards that bird,

and a man tracing that eagle through the eye piece of his rifle,

and a stray comet spinning silently and slowly towards planet earth......

Inspirational quotes | "Tuesdays with Morrie" by Mitch Albom

"None of us can undo what we've done, or relive a life already recorded. But if Professor Morris Schwartz taught me anything at all, it was this: there is no such thing as "too late" in life. He was changing until the day he said goodbye." ~ Mitch Albom

"As long as we can love each other, and remember the feeling of love we had, we can die without ever really going away. All the love you created is still there. All the memories are still there. You live on - in the hearts of everyone you have touched and nurtured while you were here." ~ Morris Schwartz

"The problem is that we don't believe we are as much alike as we are. Whites and blacks, Catholics and Protestants, men and women. If we saw each other as more alike, we might be very eager to join in one by human family in this world, and to care about that family the way we care about our own." ~ Morris Schwartz

"We all have tha same beginning - birth - and we all have the same end - death. So how different can we be?" ~ Morris Schwartz

Digital Dumping

In the IT world, the human species is forever racing.

Racing for the latest model.
Racing for the sleekest look.
Racing for the coolest "toy".

If the human species slows down on consumerism and takes a breather, would that force the manufacturers to cut down on unnecessary productions?

Would all then be able to smell the current damages to both the earth and their fellow species?

Would they realize that they are racing towards an eventual global shutdown?

Clouds | Life is Like Clouds

Lately, I've been looking at lot at clouds.

Clouds are there, and yet they are not.

When we approach a ball of cloud & reach out to touch it, we couldn't.

When we approach a ball of clouds with a jar or container to capture it, we couldn't.

We see ever-shifting shapes formed by the clouds against the vast blue sky.

Sometimes, the clouds seemed to dance a lonely slow dance on their own - savoring every moment and enjoying the independence.

Sometimes, they would join up with other clouds for a breathtaking group dance. And when they part, they would have left a piece of itself with the other clouds.

Sometimes, the clouds would disperse and disappear slowly but surely.

Sometimes, the clouds would disperse and seem about to disappear when they begin to take on a 'second life'.

No one cloud would remain the same - unchanged.

No dance pattern would be repeated exactly again and again.

Life is like clouds.....

We then begin to recreate the existing DNA we have.

We start cloning.

Rain | one

The time was 7:23pm. A big storm had come earlier, coloured the sky with tones of orange and left behind tunes of trickling raindrops.

Earth is beautiful.

Life is beautiful.

On 19 March 2009, President Obama "
shouldered the blame for the multi-million dollar bonuses paid out by bailed out insurance giant AIG that sparked public outrage." He said:

"
I know Washington's all in a tizzy and everybody's pointing fingers at each other and saying it's all their fault, the Democrats' fault, the Republicans' fault. Listen, I'll take responsibility. I'm the President."

Such is the speech of a great leader.

There is hope on earth still.....

Departure |

Memory | Floppy disks

I was unpacking some stuff and found these....

My gosh! Floppy disks!!!

For those who have not seen this before, it's a double-density 5¼-inch disk. Here's the link to Wikipedia for more details.

I remember the flapping sound it created whenever I sent my documents there to be saved.

I used a camera phone to take this picture.

My use of a white envelope as the base created an accidental glow from the areas that are white. It was as though I had used a filter.

An accidental soft-focused look to bring out the nostalgia.

National Icon

It has been raining quite often these days.

Straits Times reported that the Merlion (ah, our dear old Merlion) was struck by lightning. Part of its mane was shattered.

Is this a sign that it's time we have a new icon?

We are a country with an ever changing landscape.

Our Merlion has matured to the category one terms as "old".

Time to remove the old and bring on the new.

Thus, a new icon will be needed.

Let's introduce the great mighty CRANE.

The Crane can be seen everywhere! in Singapore. It is a great icon to symbolize Singapore's progress.

It screams out to the world that Singapore is a country strong in Nation BUILDING.

And if we require it to sprout something, it could always sprout diesel oil from its engine.

Impressive Security Guard

Yesterday, I made a trip to Sim Lim Square to get a 1TB external hard drive from SGL Marketing.

It's my third visit to the shop and I still could not remember its location.

I approached the information counter and a security guard was manning it.

I asked him for the unit number of SGL. He stared into the air and recited, "SGL Marketing.... its... unit number 02-22."

I was very impressed. He didn't refer to any list/computer/log book/etc at all. He must have all the shops' location imprinted into his memory. That's a great feat.

Somehow, I can't help but believe that this uncle (the security guard) has pride in his job.

Memory | Photo prints & negatives

The picture on the left is an original print. The one on the right is a reprint.

Both photos have been kept in an album since 1999.

The year now is 2009. The reprinted photo has faded.

It's a matter of time that the original print will start to fade.

Thank goodness there's a new technology that allows us to convert our negatives into soft copies that can be burnt onto a compact disc.

I can now back up all the negatives I have.

Contentment

Time was 8.30am.

The morning sky was grey and gloomy.

The sun burst through the dull sky with a ball of bright orange.

I captured this moment.

I took a long look at it.

I heaved a sigh of contentment.

I carried on the rest of the day with a smile on my face.

Scenes of Singapore | An Eventful Death?

There was once a majestic tree at Cairnhill.

It was decided that the tree had to make way for progress.

For comfort.

For LUXURIOUS comfort to be enjoyed by mankind only.

Then, it was chopped down.

Soon, a new condominium of 58 units will stand where the tree once stood.

Let us reminisce and see the tree at its glory.

WHISPERS has come to a close.

Right from the start of this production, I have already anticipated its end. Thus, I don't feel any post-show blues. This anticipation is positive and healthy.

I've enjoyed the entire process of WHISPERS.

Memories of it will remain in my head.

Meanwhile, life moves on.

Quiet Moments | one

Lunar New Year has lost its meaning to me a long time ago.

It's no big deal celebrating it.

I went out on the first day of the lunar new year. Many places were totally deserted! Shops were closed and there were just a handful of passers-by.

In contrast, on the third day of the lunar new year, everywhere was bustling with people.

I began to like this festive season especially the first two days. It does create some quiet moments after all.

I felt I could breathe freely once more.
